Police Pay N310,000 to Resolve Protest by Truck Drivers Blocking Bauchi-Jos Highway

The Bauchi State Police Command has successfully de-escalated a tense situation on the busy Bauchi–Jos highway after truck drivers blocked the road in protest over the alleged damage to a colleague's truck tyre by revenue enforcement agents.

The incident occurred around 8:45 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the Miri axis of Bauchi metropolis.

According to the Bauchi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, the protest stemmed from an earlier encounter where a truck driver traveling from Jos to Bauchi failed to stop for revenue checks by officials of the Federal Government haulage unit.

The officials reportedly inserted a metal blocking device on the road, causing the driver's tyre to burst.

This sparked outrage among other truck drivers, who mounted a blockade on the highway in solidarity, disrupting vehicular movement on the major route.

Upon receiving the report initially relayed through the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Chapter, a team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘B’ Division, CSP Holman Simon, alongside CSP Abdulrazak Padah, Officer in Charge of Operation Restore Peace (ORP), swiftly responded to the scene.

The DPO engaged the aggrieved drivers diplomatically, listened to their concerns, and personally paid the sum of N310,000 to the affected driver to enable him replace the damaged tyre.

Following the intervention and payment, the protesting drivers peacefully dispersed, and normal traffic flow was fully restored on the highway.

The police also confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the breach of public peace during the protest.

Commissioner of Police, CP Sani Omolori, commended CSP Holman Simon for his prompt, professional, and diplomatic handling of the situation.

He also appreciated the residents of Bauchi State for their continued cooperation with security agencies.

The resolution highlights efforts by law enforcement to address grievances quickly and prevent prolonged disruptions on key highways, amid ongoing concerns about revenue enforcement practices at checkpoints across Nigeria.
