Police Arrest Suspect with 954 Suspected Explosives in Abuja

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Taskforce on Illegal Mining have arrested a 38-year-old suspect in Abuja for unlawful possession of suspected explosive materials, amid concerns over their potential use by bandits in Zamfara State.

The arrest occurred on January 27, 2026, at approximately 4:15 p.m., based on credible and actionable intelligence, according to security sources familiar with the operation.

The suspect, identified as Mustapha Mohammad, was intercepted while driving a Toyota Corolla with registration number KUJ 933 EJ. A thorough search of the vehicle and the suspect led to the discovery of 954 pieces of suspected explosive materials concealed in polyethylene bags.

Preliminary investigations suggest the items were intended for use by miscreants or bandits to create improvised explosive devices (IEDs), potentially aimed at causing public disturbance, breaching peace, or supporting criminal activities in high-risk areas like Zamfara.

The suspect is now in police custody, and the recovered exhibits have been secured as evidence. They have been handed over to the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team for safe custody, detailed forensic analysis, and expert examination.

Investigations are ongoing to trace the source, intended destination, and ultimate use of the materials, as well as to identify any accomplices or networks involved in their transportation and supply.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its unwavering commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal explosives, enhancing security in mining and conflict-prone regions, and protecting lives and property nationwide.

Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
