'No Steady Power in Four Years, No Second Term' – Peter Obi Reminds Tinubu

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu over unfulfilled campaign promises on electricity, highlighting repeated national grid failures and contrasting Nigeria's power woes with Turkey's capacity during the president's ongoing state visit there.

In a statement posted on his X account, Obi recalled Tinubu's 2022 campaign declaration: “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.” He argued that this pledge has been contradicted by ongoing crises, noting that the national grid has collapsed twice in January 2026 alone, with the month still unfinished.

Obi referenced approximately twelve collapses in 2025, describing the situation as a stark betrayal that should concern all patriotic Nigerians.Obi pointed to the president's current foreign trip to Turkey, a nation of about 87 million people, roughly a third of Nigeria's population, as particularly telling.

Turkey generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria manages less than 5% of that output, he stated, calling the disparity "both striking and painful."The Labour Party stalwart urged Tinubu to prioritize domestic challenges over international travel. “Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” Obi wrote.

He warned that continued absences could lead to even more distant destinations like Palau or Vanuatu while urgent issues persist unresolved.Obi expressed broader concern over Nigeria's focus on the 2027 elections rather than demanding accountability and effective governance.

He called for collective action to address "persistent bad governance" and alleviate the suffering and indignity faced by citizens due to unreliable power supply.

Tinubu departed for Turkey on January 26, 2026, for a state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties in areas including energy, defense, and trade. The trip comes amid reports of grid instability, with collapses recorded earlier in January and late 2025 contributing to widespread blackouts.
