The Oyo State Government has indefinitely suspended the Sobaloju of Ofiki, Chief Jacob Adefabi, over allegations of involvement in illegal mining activities and breaches of state regulations.
The suspension, effective from Monday, January 5, 2026, stems from claims that the monarch violated Executive Order 001/2023, which governs mining operations in the state, by issuing unauthorised consent letters to mining companies and permitting operations in government-reserved forest areas.
In a letter signed by the Director of Chieftaincy Matters in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Olajire A.M., the government described the action as a precautionary measure to safeguard public interest, protect state assets, and ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Chief Adefabi has been directed to immediately vacate the palace of the Onitọ of Ito, cease all mining-related activities, including issuing consent letters, and refrain from interfering with the probe.
He is also required to make himself available to investigators as needed. The Oyo State Government has stepped up efforts in recent years to combat illegal mining, citing concerns over environmental degradation, insecurity, and revenue losses.
Executive Order 001/2023 aims to enforce proper licensing and prevent unauthorised operations, particularly in forest reserves.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to strict enforcement of mining laws, stating that violators regardless of status will face sanctions.
As of now, Chief Adefabi has not issued a public response to the allegations.
