Osun APC Slams NLC Chairman for Declaring Support for Gov Adeleke's Re-election Bid

Osun State gubernatorial election, tensions have risen between the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Osun, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo.

The disagreement stems from Arapasopo's public endorsement of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke (now the candidate of the Accord Party) during an interdenominational service held at the Governor’s Office earlier this week.

Arapasopo pledged that state workers would vote overwhelmingly for Adeleke's second term, citing the governor's commendable welfare policies for workers and pensioners, timely implementation of infrastructure projects, and positive impacts across key sectors.

In response, the APC, through its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, issued a strongly worded statement on Friday condemning Arapasopo's actions.

The party accused the NLC leader of effectively turning himself into Adeleke's campaign manager, describing his open partisanship as "shameful" and "deplorable" ahead of the off-cycle poll.

While acknowledging Arapasopo's right to personally support any political party, the APC argued that vowing collective votes from Osun's workforce for the governor crossed ethical lines for a labour leader.

The statement labeled the incident a "show of shame," calling Arapasopo a "gross misfit" for the position and suggesting he had "sold out" to the incumbent administration, possibly for personal benefits.

The APC further stated: “Though it is the inalienable right of any labour leader to personally identify with a political party of his choice, it stands logic on its head when Arapasopo shamelessly and openly vowed for the collective votes of the workforce in the state, Since Arapasopo has tied the philosophical grains of corn round his waist, he must be ready to be the playmate of fowls,” implying he should no longer be regarded as a credible labour leader but rather as a political opponent.

The exchange highlights growing political friction in Osun State, where Governor Adeleke having defected from the PDP to the Accord Party is seeking re-election amid competition from the APC and other parties.

The APC has positioned itself as the main opposition, emphasizing past grievances against previous administrations while criticizing Adeleke's record.
