The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has strongly rejected the ongoing impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, describing the move as contrary to the wishes of the people of Rivers State.
In a press briefing held in Port Harcourt on Thursday, shortly after the Assembly commenced the process, IYC President Alaye Theophilus condemned the impeachment attempt in its entirety.
He accused the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State of fomenting trouble and unrest in the oil-rich state, labeling him an "enemy of democracy and good governance."
“The latest developments in Rivers State have revealed the true enemies of the state and as such we call for the immediate sack of the FCT Minister, the person of Barrister Nyesom Wike,” Theophilus stated.
The IYC further urged President Bola Tinubu to remove Wike from his position, insisting that his actions are destabilizing the state.Amid the escalating political tensions, the IYC reaffirmed its full support for Governor Fubara’s bid for a second term in the 2027 governorship election.
The group also declared its backing for President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, commending his leadership and democratic disposition in repositioning Nigeria.
“The IYC and the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality are behind your re-election bid for 2027 and that of Siminalayi Fubara for his second term as Governor of Rivers State,” Theophilus emphasized.
The impeachment proceedings mark the third attempt against Fubara since he assumed office in 2023, following earlier efforts in 2023 and March 2025.
The latest move stems from allegations of gross misconduct, including the governor’s failure to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill, a claim the Rivers chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to which Fubara recently defected from the PDP, has dismissed as invalid.
The APC argues that a ₦1.485 trillion budget approved by the National Assembly during a six-month state of emergency in 2025 remains in effect until August 2026, rendering a new presentation unnecessary.
During Thursday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, Majority Leader Major Jack read out the notice of allegations signed by 26 lawmakers, citing breaches of constitutional duties.
The Speaker promised to forward the notice to Governor Fubara within seven days, in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The Assembly also resolved to halt consideration of the 2026 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and budget until the probe concludes.
The executive arm of Rivers State is yet to issue an official response to the development.
