A tragic fire outbreak has completely razed more than 76 temporary shelters belonging to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ngamma village, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria.
The affected families are mostly people who fled conflict in neighboring Borno State and had been living in the community as refugees.
The incident has left them without shelter once again, compounding their already difficult circumstances. In response to the crisis, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni immediately directed the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to visit the scene and carry out a detailed damage assessment.
Preliminary findings from SEMA’s assessment show that one person sustained injuries and was hospitalised. One entire household was burnt to the ground, while the fire also destroyed livestock and a large quantity of stored foodstuffs belonging to the displaced families.
Eyewitnesses and victims, many in tears, described the heartbreaking scale of their losses and made urgent appeals for humanitarian assistance, including emergency shelter, food items, and other essential support to help them recover from the disaster.
This latest fire incident underscores the persistent vulnerability of displaced communities in the region, where such outbreaks continue to worsen the effects of prolonged displacement and insecurity.
Swift intervention from government agencies and humanitarian partners is urgently needed to assist the affected households.
