‘Fake News’ – Oyedele Debubnks Suspension of Tax Reform Implementation Guidelines

The  Nigerian government has firmly dismissed circulating claims that it has suspended the release of implementation guidelines for the recently enacted tax laws.

Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, described the reports as fake news in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

The denial comes in response to speculations that the issuance of guidelines for the country's tax reform had been paused, reportedly due to uncertainties surrounding the final versions of the laws.

The new tax laws, which took effect just about 14 days ago on January 1, 2026, have sparked significant controversy and public debate. Prominent figures, including Peter Obi (2023 Labour Party presidential candidate) and the Nigeria Labour Congress, have called for their suspension, citing concerns over alleged alterations to the gazetted versions compared to what was originally passed by the National Assembly.

However, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, has ruled out any suspension in a recent TVC interview, emphasizing that the reforms are designed to benefit Nigerians and will proceed as planned.

The government's position reaffirms its commitment to the tax reforms, dismissing misinformation and urging the public not to be swayed by unverified reports that could create unnecessary panic.

This development highlights the ongoing tension around the implementation of Nigeria's comprehensive tax overhaul, as authorities work to clarify facts and maintain momentum for the changes.
