Olubadan Snubs Alaafin at Oyo Inter-Faith Gathering

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Sen.) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, reportedly ignored a greeting from the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, during a state inter-faith service held on Monday at the Secretariat’s Grand Space behind the Oyo State House of Assembly.

According to reports from Oyo Affairs and other online platforms, the Olubadan extended a greeting to the seated Alaafin upon arrival, but the gesture went unacknowledged.

Oba Ladoja then proceeded to exchange pleasantries with other monarchs and dignitaries, including Governor Seyi Makinde, before taking his seat.

The incident has sparked discussions on social media and among observers about traditional protocol, royal hierarchy, and mutual respect among Yoruba monarchs.

Some have described it as a dramatic moment highlighting ongoing tensions in the Oyo State traditional institution, while others urge caution, emphasizing the need to respect established customs and avoid hasty interpretations.

The inter-faith gathering, attended by various religious leaders, government officials, and traditional rulers, aimed to foster unity across faiths in the state.

No official statements have been issued by the palaces of the Olubadan or Alaafin regarding the event.

This occurrence comes amid recurring debates over seniority and roles in the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, though the two monarchs have previously participated in joint engagements, including a closed-door meeting with Governor Makinde in late 2025.

The moment, captured in circulating photos, has generated mixed reactions online, with some viewing it as a sign of protocol differences and others calling for greater harmony among royal fathers.
