'Nigerian Govt Agents Impersonating Nnamdi Kanu on Social Media’ – Family

The family of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has issued an urgent public warning, accusing Nigerian government agents of creating fake social media accounts to impersonate him.

In a statement released on Thursday and signed by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu family, the relatives claimed that fraudulent profiles, primarily on Facebook and Instagram are being operated to spread disinformation, tarnish Kanu’s reputation and that of IPOB, target supporters for harassment or arrest, harvest personal data, and monitor public engagement.

The family emphasized that since Kanu’s rendition and detention in June 2021, he has maintained no active or verified social media presence on any platform. They described the impostor accounts as featuring official-looking logos, false location claims (such as Nairobi or Sokoto), and misleading posts designed to solicit likes, comments, shares, or follows from the public.

“The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), hereby issues this urgent public safety warning to the general public,” the statement began.

“It has come to our attention that fraudulent social media accounts, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, are impersonating Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”The family further alleged: “These impostor pages are part of a sustained deceptive operation, believed to be orchestrated by Nigerian security agencies and their collaborators."

They urged the public to avoid all engagement with such accounts. “Do not follow, like, comment on, share, or engage with any such fake pages” and to rely solely on official IPOB communication channels for authentic information.

The statement reiterated Kanu’s commitment to the “peaceful, non-violent pursuit of self-determination for Biafrans” and called for his unconditional release, framing the alleged impersonation as an extension of efforts to undermine the Biafran cause.

No immediate response from Nigerian government officials or security agencies was reported in connection with the family’s claims.
