Nigerian Army Rescues Retired Colonel Abducted in Plateau State

Nigerian Army troops under Operation Safe Haven have successfully rescued retired Colonel Ajanaku, a senior military officer abducted by gunmen from his home in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The kidnapping occurred around 12:45 a.m. on January 5, 2026, when armed assailants stormed the retired officer's residence opposite the Salvation Army Church along Rukuba Road.

Security sources reported that troops from relevant sectors swiftly mobilized, pursuing the kidnappers through their escape route via the Wildlife Park area. Intensive search-and-rescue efforts focused on caves, forests, and rocky terrains known as potential criminal hideouts.

The abductors later contacted the victim's wife, demanding a N200 million ransom and issuing threats to kill him if military pursuit continued. In response, forces shifted to intelligence-led covert operations, which proved effective.

Colonel Ajanaku was rescued unharmed around 5:30 p.m. the same day near the Rafiki axis in Bassa LGA.

The retired officer is currently receiving medical evaluation at a military facility and will be debriefed to gather intelligence for further actions.

Troops continue aggressive patrols in surrounding forests to apprehend the fleeing suspects and disrupt kidnapping networks in the region.
