The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that one of its CH-4 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), identified as NAF-114, crashed near Kontagora in Niger State on January 2, 2026.
The incident occurred during a routine surveillance mission under Operation FASAN YAMMA, a counter-insurgency effort in the North-West zone.
According to NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the drone experienced a "loss of link" with its control station.
Attempts to restore communication failed, prompting the activation of emergency return-to-base protocols.
The UAV ultimately crashed in a forested area, but the wreckage was swiftly secured and recovered through coordinated efforts with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.
No casualties were reported, as the aircraft is unmanned, and there was no damage to civilian property.
Preliminary investigations are underway to determine the exact cause, with some reports suggesting a possible propulsion anomaly.
The NAF emphasized that the incident will not disrupt ongoing operations, reaffirming its commitment to national security and professionalism in counter-terrorism efforts.
Photos and videos of the damaged drone circulated widely on social media, sparking speculation, though official statements rule out hostile action.
The CH-4B, a Chinese-made medium-altitude long-endurance combat drone, is part of Nigeria's fleet used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strikes against insurgent groups.
