Nigeria, Switzerland Strengthen Ties on Non-Kinetic Security, Peacebuilding

The Nigerian Armed Forces and the Swiss Government have pledged to build on their longstanding partnership, placing greater emphasis on non-kinetic strategies such as humanitarian aid, dialogue, and conflict prevention to tackle insecurity.

This commitment was highlighted during a courtesy visit by Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Patrick Felix Egloff, to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Olufemi Oluyede at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Ambassador Egloff reiterated Switzerland's dedication to bolstering diplomatic and defence ties with Nigeria. He highlighted his country's particular interest in non-kinetic measures, including humanitarian engagements and initiatives that foster peace and stability.

"Switzerland is keen to support approaches that address the root causes of insecurity through dialogue, development assistance, and institutional partnerships," Egloff stated, underscoring the value of sustained collaboration between the two nations. In response, General Oluyede thanked Switzerland for its ongoing support for Nigeria's security and stability.

He praised the country's contributions to non-kinetic efforts, which effectively complement Nigeria's military operations. The CDS expressed confidence that the bilateral relationship would grow stronger, yielding greater results in shared priorities like peacebuilding and strategic cooperation.

The discussions align with earlier engagements, including Ambassador Egloff's January 15, 2026, visit to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.

There, the ambassador emphasized Switzerland's expertise in non-kinetic security, leveraging its global reputation for neutrality, diplomacy, and peace mediation.

Switzerland has provided tangible support, such as mobile medical clinics that improve frontline care for wounded personnel, and has played a key role in past humanitarian diplomacy, including facilitating the 2016 release of Chibok schoolgirls and aiding recent rescues of over 300 kidnapped victims.

The COAS commended Switzerland as a leader in peace promotion and humanitarian efforts, noting how such partnerships build confidence and support Nigeria's broader security framework.

Both meetings reflect a shared focus on holistic security solutions that combine military action with non-kinetic initiatives to promote lasting stability in Nigeria.
