Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, has issued a sobering warning that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads, describing the nation as being “in peril” and urgently requiring a collective national salvation to avert further decline.
Delivering his remarks at a high-profile leadership colloquium held in Abuja to mark his 60th birthday, Tambuwal made it clear that the event was not intended as personal celebration but as a serious platform to confront the country’s deepening challenges and chart a path forward.
He expressed deep disappointment that Nigeria has fallen far short of the democratic promise and expectations that greeted the return to civilian rule in 1999.
Tambuwal stated that many of the architects of the country’s democracy, both those still alive and those who have passed would be profoundly unhappy with the present reality.
“This is not where we expected to be,” he said. “Those who laid the foundation of our democracy… are not happy, even in their graves, with the current situation in Nigeria.”
The former Speaker emphasized that genuine national recovery can only begin when Nigerians, across all divides, collectively admit that the current system of governance is fundamentally flawed.
“Our nation is in peril, and we are in search of salvation. This is a collective process,” he declared.
Tambuwal stressed that the responsibility to rescue Nigeria cannot be left to political parties alone.
While parties must present clear, workable programmes for governance, he insisted that every citizen must take ownership of the country’s future.
“We have nowhere else to go. We must remain here and do the right thing to get the right leadership,” he added.
Marking his milestone 60th birthday, Tambuwal said he had moved beyond hesitation and pledged to work tirelessly with all Nigerians who share the vision of enthroning good democratic governance.
“I recommit myself to working with every Nigerian who believes in finding and enthroning good democratic governance for this country,” he affirmed.
The colloquium attracted a distinguished gathering of Nigeria’s political heavyweights, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan (who sent a goodwill message), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and several other notable figures.
Former President Obasanjo, who presided over the occasion, lauded Tambuwal’s humility and consistent service, describing his leadership as one marked by wisdom and character.
Former President Jonathan acknowledged past political differences but praised the strong confidence that members of the House of Representatives had in Tambuwal during his speakership, calling it a testament to rare leadership qualities.
David Mark described Tambuwal as a humble, dependable, and trustworthy leader, while Peter Obi urged him to use the milestone as an opportunity for deeper reflection and renewed commitment.
The event featured a keynote address by former INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, titled “The Future of Democratic Governance in Nigeria: Pathways to National Cohesion, Human Security and Economic Renewal.”
Participants left the colloquium with a renewed sense of urgency, agreeing that Nigeria’s mounting challenges political, economic, and social demand nothing less than collective resolve, moral courage, and unity of purpose to overcome.
