Defection: Jang Tells Mutfwang To Resign, Contest Fresh Election

Former Plateau State Governor and prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Senator Jonah David Jang, has called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to resign his position and contest a fresh election after defecting from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The demand comes weeks after Governor Mutfwang officially resigned from the PDP in late December 2025 and formally joined the APC in early January 2026.

The move was described by Mutfwang as a step toward better alignment with federal government programs for improved service delivery and development in the state.

Speaking at a recent PDP stakeholders' meeting in Jos, Jang strongly criticized the practice of elected officials carrying their mandate to another party without returning to the electorate.

He argued that ballots feature party symbols, not individual names, emphasizing that the PDP platform and not personal identity secured Mutfwang's victory in the 2023 governorship election.

“You should first resign that position, call for a fresh election and then you can recontest in the new party. That should be the right democracy,” Jang stated.

The veteran politician, who governed Plateau from 2007 to 2015, insisted that Mutfwang remains the PDP's governor until the APC grants him a fresh mandate in the 2027 elections.

“Caleb Mutfwang is still the governor of Plateau state and it is we that brought him to power,” he added.

“He can’t take our mandate anywhere.”Jang also lamented Nigeria's legal framework that permits such defections without requiring resignation, describing it as unique and detrimental to true democratic principles.

He warned against the trend of politicians defecting toward a dominant party, which he said could lead the country toward a one-party state.

The PDP in Plateau has previously condemned Mutfwang's defection as a "betrayal of public mandate," while the APC has welcomed the governor and several other defectors, viewing it as a boost for unity and governance.

This latest statement from Jang highlights ongoing tensions within Plateau's political landscape following the high-profile switch, with implications for party structures and the buildup to the 2027 general elections.
