Kontagora Local Government Area in Niger State has launched a new community-driven security initiative titled “Operation Know Your Neighbour,” aimed at enhancing neighbourhood safety and promoting intelligence-sharing among residents.
The programme, introduced under the leadership of LGA Chairman Barrister Lawal Yusuf, was officially rolled out through two key traditional authorities: Alhaji Haruna Saidu Namaska, Bunun Kontagora and District Head of the West, and Alhaji Idris S.B., District Head of the East.
The initiative seeks to address growing security concerns linked to the influx of unfamiliar individuals into the town.
Reports highlight instances where residents and property agents rent or sell houses to strangers without verifying their backgrounds, creating potential vulnerabilities exploited by criminal elements.
By encouraging residents to know their neighbours, especially newcomers and monitor their activities, the programme promotes proactive vigilance to protect lives and property.
Security observers have praised the move as a timely and practical step, urging other Local Government Areas across Northern Nigeria to adopt similar community-led measures.
When coordinated with traditional rulers and local authorities, such initiatives are seen as one of the most effective ways to prevent insecurity from escalating.
Kontagora's effort sets a commendable example for grassroots security enhancement in the region.
