National Assembly Not Stalling Electoral Act Amendment – Deputy Speaker Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has dismissed claims that the National Assembly is deliberately delaying the amendment of the Electoral Act, insisting that the legislative process is progressing steadily and in line with established procedures.

In a statement addressing public concerns and criticisms over the pace of work on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, Kalu emphasized that the National Assembly remains committed to thorough, inclusive, and constitutionally compliant reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria's electoral framework.

He pointed out that the amendment process involves extensive consultations, committee reviews, public hearings, and harmonization between the House and Senate steps that naturally require time to ensure quality outcomes and broad acceptance.

Kalu highlighted recent related efforts, including the ongoing constitutional review exercise (which he chairs in the House), where electoral reforms such as independent candidacy, establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission, fixed timelines for pre-election matters, and enhanced INEC powers have been prioritized based on citizens' inputs from nationwide zones.

The Deputy Speaker noted that the 10th National Assembly has already advanced significant electoral-related proposals in 2025, including clause-by-clause considerations and amendments to consolidate INEC's authority, promote transparency, reduce post-election litigation, and address weaknesses observed in past polls.

He assured Nigerians that the legislature is not idle, with plenary sessions, committee work, and coordination continuing despite the recent holiday adjournment (to January 27, 2026, for Christmas and New Year).

Kalu stressed that any perceived slowdown reflects the need for due diligence rather than obstruction.

"The National Assembly is fully engaged and will deliver people-centered electoral reforms that build public confidence in our democracy," Kalu stated, urging stakeholders to appreciate the complexity of amending key legislation while maintaining bipartisan support and regulatory integrity.

The clarification comes amid expectations for updated electoral laws ahead of future elections, aligning with broader goals under the Renewed Hope Agenda to improve electoral integrity, efficiency, and inclusivity in Nigeria.
