Gov Okpebholo Meets Keyamo to Fast-Track Launch of Indigenous Airline

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, paid a strategic courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, on Thursday, January 22, 2026, to push forward plans for establishing an indigenous airline operating from Benin Airport.

Accompanied by key cabinet members, Governor Okpebholo emphasized the urgency of launching a homegrown carrier, describing aviation as a vital engine for economic revival, attracting investments, generating jobs, and repositioning Benin City as a regional hub.

The governor revealed that the state is actively pursuing partnerships, including commitments from South African investors to supply aircraft for immediate operations.

“If I have my way, I want this airline to kick off immediately like tomorrow, even before the election. Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy,” Okpebholo stated.

In response, Minister Keyamo hailed the proposal as timely and visionary, noting growing investor interest in Benin Airport's commercial potential.

He highlighted the airport's historical significance as a major hub during the era of the defunct Okada Air, affirming that Benin is poised to reclaim that status.

To accelerate the initiative, Keyamo announced the formation of a technical committee.

He requested the governor to designate a point person to collaborate directly with the Ministry's Director of Air Transport Management on regulatory compliance, coordination, and operational planning.

The committee will provide weekly updates to both leaders.“With proper collaboration, Benin Airport should be fully operational between the first and second quarters of this year,” Keyamo assured.

The meeting reflects the Federal Government's support for enhanced regional air connectivity, indigenous airline growth, and state-driven aviation projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The discussions align with broader efforts to revive Benin Airport's infrastructure and boost Edo State's economic landscape through improved aviation services.
