NASS Clarifies Alleged Discrepancies in Gazetted Tax Acts

The National Assembly has moved to dispel public concerns regarding alleged discrepancies in the recently gazetted tax reform acts, announcing the release of certified copies of the bills signed by President Bola Tinubu for public verification.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Information, Mr. Bullah Bi-Allah, the Assembly confirmed that the Clerk has been directed to make available the transmitted tax bills, complete with certificate pages, to enable independent scrutiny.

Bi-Allah noted that management had acknowledged reports of differences between the National Assembly's votes and proceedings and the published gazetted versions.

The release of the documents, he said, responds directly to calls for greater transparency.Despite heightened public interest, only a limited number of formal requests for Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the harmonised bills have been received, with all such applications already processed.

The Clerk is also collaborating with the Federal Government Printing Press to produce the officially certified and assented Acts, expected to be available today.

Bi-Allah clarified that while the Clerk initiates the gazetting process, the statutory responsibility for printing and publication rests with the government printing press.

To enhance procedural robustness, the National Assembly plans to review bill transmission protocols.

Going forward, all bills for presidential assent will be routed through presidential liaison officers, and gazetting requests will only be accepted when initiated by the Clerk or an authorised representative.

The Assembly expressed appreciation for public engagement in promoting transparency and accountability in the legislative process.Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed on Tuesday that the implementation of the new tax laws, some enacted on June 26, 2025, and others commencing January 1, 2026, will proceed as scheduled.

In a personally signed statement, the President described the reforms as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to establish a fair and competitive fiscal framework, emphasising that they aim to harmonise systems and strengthen the social contract rather than raise taxes.

He called for stakeholder support during the delivery phase, stating that no significant issues have emerged to justify delaying the reforms.
