The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has publicly released the full names and ranks of 16 military officers indicted by a Special Investigative Panel for allegedly plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's government.
In a statement issued on January 27, 2026, Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, confirmed that the panel concluded its probe into the officers detained since October 2025 and found them guilty of serious misconduct, including actions inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The officers, drawn from the Nigerian Army (primarily Infantry, Signals, and Ordnance Corps), Navy, and Air Force, will now face a military Court Martial in line with established procedures to uphold discipline, cohesion, and operational effectiveness.
The full list of the 16 indicted officers is as follows:
- Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq (Nasarawa State, 44th Regular Course)
- Colonel M. A. Ma’aji (Niger State, 47th Regular Course)
- Lieutenant Colonel S. Bappah (Bauchi State, 56th Regular Course)
- Lieutenant Colonel A. A. Hayatu (Kaduna State, 56th Regular Course)
- Lieutenant Colonel Dangnan (Plateau State, 56th Regular Course)
- Lieutenant Colonel M. Almakura (Nasarawa State, 56th Regular Course)
- Major A. J. Ibrahim (Gombe State, 56th Regular Course)
- Major M. M. Jiddah (Katsina State, 56th Regular Course)
- Major M. A. Usman (Federal Capital Territory, 60th Regular Course)
- Major D. Yusuf (Gombe State, 59th Regular Course)
- Major I. Dauda (Jigawa State, DSSC 38)
- Captain I. Bello (DSSC 43)
- Captain A. A. Yusuf
- Lieutenant S. S. Felix (DSSC)
- Lieutenant Commander D. B. Abdullahi (Nigerian Navy)
- Squadron Leader S. B. Adamu (Nigerian Air Force)
The DHQ emphasized that the measures are necessary to preserve order and professionalism within the Armed Forces.
The investigation report has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities, with formal arraignment before a military judicial panel expected soon under the Armed Forces Act and related regulations.
The case follows initial reports in October 2025 of the officers' detention for alleged indiscipline and breach of service rules, which the military later linked to the coup allegations. It revives Nigeria's historical sensitivity to military interventions, last prominent before the return to civilian rule in 1999.
The Armed Forces reiterated their firm loyalty to the Constitution and the federal government led by President Tinubu, amid ongoing national security challenges including insurgencies and other threats.
No trial dates have been announced as proceedings remain in the pre-trial phase.
