Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, has dismissed speculation about defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he remains committed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Makinde spoke on Thursday after meeting President Bola
Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
Asked by reporters whether he would join the APC like some
of his colleagues, the governor said he is comfortable in the opposition party.
“I am comfortable in the PDP,” Makinde said.
“There are moments in a country’s life when a bipartisan
approach is required — not an APC-only or PDP-only conversation — but a
collective effort focused on what is best for Nigeria.
“When we get to that point, we will need everyone on board.”
A wave of defections has significantly reduced the PDP’s
control at the state level, leaving the opposition party with four governors —
Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Makinde of Oyo, and Dauda
Lawal of Zamfara.
Makinde, a member of the PDP, recently said he would not
support Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing concerns about the survival of
democracy in Nigeria.
Makinde also detailed his rift with Nyesom Wike, minister of
the federal capital territory (FCT), saying the former governor of Rivers had
vowed to “hold PDP” for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections without consulting
other party stakeholders.
In the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, Makinde
was part of the G5 governors within the PDP who declined to support Atiku
Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate.
The G5 governors, led by Wike, argued that the PDP’s
presidential candidate should not emerge from the same region as the party’s
national chairman.
Tinubu, the APC candidate, won the presidential election in
Oyo, a PDP-controlled state.
The relationship between Makinde and Wike later degenerated,
with both politicians locked in a struggle for control of the PDP structures.
