Paul Ikonne, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia state, has urged residents to hold the administration of Alex Otti accountable in 2026.
In a New Year message issued on Thursday, Ikonne asked
Abians to “rise with courage” and demand transparency, accountability and
fairness from those in power.
The former executive secretary and chief executive officer
(CEO) of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) said the
state government must allow LG authorities to function freely and effectively.
“As the dawn of this new year breaks, I stand with every
Abian, filled with hope and determination,” he said.
Ikonne said Abia’s progress depends on leadership that
serves the people and governance that listens to citizens.
“In this 2026, I encourage every Abian to rise with courage
and ask the right questions of those in power,” he said.
“Let us demand transparency, accountability, fairness, and a
government that listens to its citizens.”
The APC chieftain described LGs as the engines of grassroots
development, noting that they “are the closest to the people”.
“When they are empowered, roads are built, schools are
supported, healthcare reaches our communities, and jobs are created,” he said.
Ikonne warned that restricting councils hinders development
and deepens hardship.
“Without them, progress stalls and our people suffer,” he
said.
He called on Otti to strengthen grassroots democracy in the
new year.
“I call on Governor Alex Otti to honour this responsibility
in the new year,” Ikonne said.
“Let our councils breathe again, let democracy flourish at
the grassroots, and let Abians feel the impact of governance in their daily
lives.”
Ikonne said Abia’s greatness would be achieved by empowering
citizens rather than concentrating power.
“Abia shall be great again, not by silencing the people, but
by empowering them. Not by concentrating power, but by spreading it to every
corner of our land,” he said.
