Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has predicted a victorious outcome for himself in the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 8, 2026, citing the support of the people as the source of his confidence.
His main challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, on the other hand, appealed to residents for support, promising to ensure effective functioning across all sectors if elected.
Also contesting is former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Dr. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress, who urged citizens to participate actively in shaping the future of the state.
The three leaders spoke in separate New Year messages to the people on Thursday.
In his message, Adeleke, whose re-election bid is under the Accord Party, described 2026 as “an era of victory and prosperity when citizens must engage in electoral vigilance and activism.”
Reflecting on 2025, which he described as a challenging year due to external constraints, Adeleke expressed optimism that the new year would bring liberation from obstacles impeding good governance and democratic dividends.
He called on residents to pray for a smooth, free, and fair electoral process.
“2026 is a defining moment for Osun state as the election year for the governorship poll. Some people are busy beating drums of war. We should pray to God to disappoint them and to make their plots come to naught. Election is not war; it is the exercise of sovereignty by the people,” Adeleke said.
Warning against attempts to manipulate the polls, Adeleke said, “Those seeking power through inflicting hardship on Osun people will fail at the polls. People will surely use their votes to punish those behind the illegal seizure of Osun funds. There can be no shortcut to power in a true democracy; the votes and voices of the people are the undiluted channels.”
Adeleke added, “We are determined to secure another victory at the August poll; our strengths are in God and the people whom we have served evidently in the last three years. I will beat my challengers in more than 28 of the 30 local governments in Osun State.”
In his New Year message, Oyebamiji promised a “mass-focused and people-centred progressive government in 2026,” stressing that his administration would place citizens’ interests at the center of governance.
“As we walk into the year of manifestation, let’s continue to champion the virtues of love, unity, sacrifice, resilience and peaceful coexistence that define us as a people,” he said.
“As the candidate of Nigeria’s ruling party, APC, I am ready to lead our party and our people to victory on August 8, 2026. My pact is to build a state where every sector works for the benefit of all, regardless of political, cultural, or religious affiliations.”
Similarly, Salaam lauded residents’ resilience and faith, urging them to remain steadfast and optimistic amid socio-economic challenges.
“The New Year 2026 presents us with a fresh opportunity to reflect, renew our commitments, and work together for the Osun of our dreams, an Osun that is prosperous, inclusive, and just for all,” he said. Salaam also called on youths, women, professionals, artisans, and traditional institutions to actively participate in shaping the state’s future.
He added, “As we approach the 2026 governorship election, I remain committed to offering visionary and compassionate leadership that prioritizes education, healthcare, job creation, security, and economic empowerment. Together, by the grace of God and the will of the people, Osun shall rise to greater heights.”
