The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially listed Senator Nenadi Usman as the caretaker committee chairperson of the Labour Party (LP) on its website, following a Federal High Court order.
The update, visible as of Friday, January 30, 2026, confirms Usman’s leadership alongside other key members: Senator Darlington Nwokocha (National Secretary), Hamisu Santuraki (National Treasurer), Aisha Madije (National Financial Secretary), and Eric Ifere (National Legal Adviser).
This follows the January 21, 2026 ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which sacked Julius Abure as national chairman, declared his tenure expired, and affirmed the Usman-led caretaker committee as the party’s lawful authority pending its next national convention.
The decision rested on a prior Supreme Court verdict from April 2025 recognising Usman’s faction.
The ruling has deepened the long-running leadership crisis in the Labour Party, which intensified after the 2023 elections and Peter Obi’s subsequent move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Abia State Governor Alex Otti was later appointed national leader under the caretaker arrangement.
The Abure faction has vowed to appeal, with spokesman Obiorah Ifoh describing the judgment as contradictory to Supreme Court precedents that treat party leadership as internal, non-justiciable matters. He cited earlier Court of Appeal decisions affirming Abure’s position.
The Usman-led group welcomed the INEC recognition, stating it clears the path for official party activities, including congresses, primaries, and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
