Guinea to inaugurate Doumbouya as President January 17

Guinea’s military ruler, Mamady Doumbouya, is set to be formally sworn in as President on January 17, following his victory in last month’s presidential election, the presidency announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement shared on the presidency’s official Facebook page, the inauguration ceremony will take place at the General Lansana Conté Stadium on the outskirts of Conakry, the Guinean capital.

Doumbouya, who has largely stayed out of public view since casting his vote in the election, had earlier pledged not to seek elected office after taking power

However, he later entered the race, which went ahead without the participation of key opposition figures who were barred from contesting.

On Sunday, Guinea’s Supreme Court upheld the election results, declaring Doumbouya the winner with 86.7 per cent of the votes cast.

The junta leader has made few public appearances in recent weeks. Since his electoral victory, he has addressed the nation only through a pre-recorded broadcast, and during the campaign period, he held just one public outing.

Doumbouya came to power in September 2021 after leading a military coup that ousted Alpha Condé, Guinea’s first democratically elected president.

His tenure as head of the transition government has been marked by restrictions on civic space, including the banning of protests and the suspension of political activities.

Several opposition figures have been arrested, prosecuted, or forced into exile, while political parties and media organisations have also faced sanctions.

In September 2025, Guineans approved a new constitution via referendum, a move that allowed members of the ruling junta to contest elections.

The new charter also extended presidential terms from five to seven years, with a maximum of two terms.
