The National Vanguard for Accountable and Transparent Democracy (NVATD), a pro-democracy and accountability group, has accused Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara of triggering renewed political instability by allegedly disregarding the peace agreements brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June and September 2025.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, January 10, and signed by its spokesperson, Comrade Wisdom Abah, NVATD held Governor Fubara solely responsible for the resurgence of the crisis, including the ongoing impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The group argued that faithful implementation of the Tinubu-mediated deals which required the governor to recognise the House of Assembly's full autonomy, restore its financial and administrative independence, settle outstanding entitlements to lawmakers, and collaborate on budgetary processes would have prevented the current escalation.
“By willfully breaching the peace deal supervised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has invited political anarchy into Rivers State,” the statement read.
“This impeachment crisis is not accidental; it is a direct consequence of the governor’s refusal to honour agreements freely entered into before the President and other key stakeholders.”
NVATD specifically cited Fubara's alleged refusal to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the Assembly as the most glaring violation, describing it as a deliberate effort to undermine and de-recognise the legislature, in contravention of constitutional provisions.
The group also criticised remarks reportedly made by the governor in a BBC interview, suggesting the Assembly's authority derives from him, which they said violated the separation of powers and the spirit of the peace accord.
“The governor was explicitly cautioned under the peace framework to avoid actions or statements capable of escalating tensions,” NVATD stated.
“Unfortunately, he has chosen confrontation, leading to the collapse of a peace process designed to stabilise Rivers State.”
The statement concluded by calling on Governor Fubara to consider resigning honourably, having allegedly lost the confidence of the legislature and breached commitments made before President Tinubu.
This development comes amid heightened tensions in Rivers State, where the House of Assembly has advanced impeachment moves against Fubara and his deputy, citing gross misconduct including non-presentation of the budget and other alleged breaches.
