Ghanaian security forces have detained 17 heavily armed soldiers from Burkina Faso after they crossed into Ghanaian territory and were spotted setting up a combat position in the Sissala East District.
The incident occurred on January 1 or 2, 2026, near the border community of Wuru, approximately one hour east of Tumu in the Upper West Region.
Local residents alerted authorities after observing the soldiers, aged between 20 and 30, fortifying a position with sandbags while in possession of firearms, ammunition, and explosive devices.
During interrogation, the Burkinabè soldiers claimed they were on a routine patrol and had inadvertently crossed the border after becoming disoriented.
They were held for several hours until around 9:00 p.m., when higher authorities in Ghana ordered their release.
Their weapons were returned the following day following diplomatic engagement, including a visit by staff from the Ghanaian Embassy in Burkina Faso.
The event highlights ongoing sensitivities along the porous Ghana-Burkina Faso border amid regional security challenges, including jihadist insurgencies in Burkina Faso.
No escalation has been reported, and the matter appears to have been resolved diplomatically to prevent tensions.
