The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the United States' unilateral military operation in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, calling it an "unauthorised invasion" that violates international law.
The statement comes after explosions rocked Caracas in the early hours of January 3, causing widespread power outages.
Hours later, US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had captured Maduro and his wife, who were subsequently flown to New York to face charges.
In its official release on January 4, Ghana described the US actions as a breach of the United Nations Charter, international law, and Venezuela's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The government expressed particular concern over indications that the US plans to oversee Venezuela during a transitional period, warning that such moves recall colonialism and could destabilise global order, especially regarding control of natural resources.
Reaffirming support for self-determination, Ghana stressed that only Venezuelans should decide their political future without foreign interference.
The statement urged immediate de-escalation and called for the unconditional release of President Maduro and his wife.
International reactions remain divided, with some nations backing the operation amid allegations against Maduro, while others, including several in Latin America, Russia, and China, have denounced it as illegal intervention.
