At least four persons were reportedly killed and three others injured when suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked Baidi village in Tangaza LGA of Sokoto.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on
the lake Chad region, said the attack occurred at about 9:30 pm on Thursday.
Quoting security sources, Makama said the heavily armed
terrorists invaded the village in large numbers and operated for several
minutes before fleeing.
The publication said a communication blackout in the
community, located near the Niger Republic border, delayed reports of the
attack.
It added that troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, alongside
police operatives and personnel of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps, were later
deployed to the area.
Makama said bodies of the victims and those injured were
evacuated to a hospital for autopsy and medical treatment.
The publication added that security agencies have since
launched a manhunt for the attackers, with patrols intensified in surrounding
communities to reassure residents and prevent further attacks.
The attack comes barely one month after the United States
launched air strikes targeting camps linked to Islamic State-affiliated
terrorists and Lakurawa groups in the state.
Carried out on Christmas Day, the strikes were intended to
degrade terrorist networks operating along Nigeria’s north-western border
corridor, though details on casualties and the full impact of the operation
were not officially disclosed.
Meanwhile, Christopher Musa, minister of defence, has
repeatedly raised concerns over Nigeria’s porous borders, saying they are
fuelling the country’s insecurity.
Musa had said the federal government is exploring measures
to curb illegal crossings that enable terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers to
operate across Nigeria, including the construction of border barriers and the
deployment of advanced technology.
