Fire Razes Storey Building in Lagos' Computer Village, Destroys Goods Worth Millions

A devastating fire completely destroyed a one-storey commercial building in the bustling Computer Village area of Ikeja, Lagos, in the early hours of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, resulting in the loss of property and goods estimated at several million naira.

The blaze broke out around 1:55 a.m. on Somoye Osundairo Street, in a structure housing numerous dealers in computers, accessories, and related electronics.

The high volume of combustible materials, including stored gadgets and components, fueled rapid spread, with active flames and dense smoke engulfing the top floor and razing it entirely.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) promptly activated its emergency response protocols from the command and control centre in Alausa, Ikeja.

The Lagos Response Team (LRT), comprising multi-agency responders including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police Force arrived on scene by approximately 2:15 a.m.Upon arrival, teams conducted a thorough risk assessment, cordoned off the area for safety, and implemented measures to shield adjoining buildings from the inferno.

The fire was successfully contained, preventing further spread to neighboring structures. Operations have since transitioned to damping-down to eliminate hotspots and prevent re-ignition, while rescue and recovery efforts have been completed.

No fatalities were reported in the incident. However, one firefighter from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service sustained minor injuries and received immediate first aid treatment on-site from LASAMBUS personnel.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the details, noting the building's partial structural compromise and recommending an immediate assessment.

He stated that the cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities have called for a detailed probe into the incident.

Computer Village, one of Africa's largest ICT accessory markets, is densely packed with shops and high-risk materials, making such fires particularly destructive despite swift emergency interventions.

Traders and stakeholders in the area are now assessing the full extent of their losses.
