A devastating fire broke out on Sunday morning at the Mobile Police Squadron 13 (Mopol 13) headquarters in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, Nigeria, completely gutting the office complex and armoury.
The blaze, which started around 10 a.m., rapidly spread from one of the offices, reportedly the Squadron Commander's office to other parts of the facility, destroying several offices and critical infrastructure.
The Mopol 13 base is located near the main Benue State Police Command headquarters.
An eyewitness on duty described noticing smoke emerging from the commander's office before flames erupted suddenly, engulfing the building.
Despite quick efforts to alert senior officers and summon firefighters, the fire had already caused extensive damage by the time help arrived.
The cause of the incident remains unknown, and authorities have not yet determined the full extent of the losses, particularly in the armoury section.
Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the command's awareness of the outbreak and promised more details would follow.
No injuries have been reported so far from the incident.
