EFCC Arraigns NRS Official, Banker for ₦336m Fraud in Fake Rice Deal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Aliyu Umar, an official of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), and Ambrose Idama, a staff member of a major commercial bank, before the Federal High Court in Lafia over an alleged ₦336.4 million fraud.

The defendants were charged on nine counts involving fraudulent conversion of funds and financial cybercrime.EFCC prosecuting counsel Uwaisu Yusuf told the court that between March and September 2021, Umar allegedly collected ₦336.4 million from Mallam Ishaku Danladi-Abari, a retired Nasarawa State permanent secretary now in private business.

The money was reportedly obtained under the false claim of securing and facilitating a huge contract for Umar’s company, Bamo Value Integrated Services Limited, to supply five million 50kg bags of rice over two years to an entity called “UN Rescue Services.”

Investigations by the EFCC revealed that no such organisation exists. The commission further alleged that Umar conspired with Idama to approve the transfer of ₦100 million to an account linked to another fictitious company, Prowess Energy Limited.

After submissions from both sides, Justice Mobolaji Olubukola Olajuwon granted bail under strict conditions.

Umar was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦150 million with two sureties, each required to own landed property worth more than the bail sum in Abuja or Nasarawa State.

Idama received bail in the sum of ₦100 million with two sureties who must be close relatives and landowners in Abuja or Nasarawa State.

The court directed all sureties to provide proof of three years’ tax payments, submit two recent passport photographs, and deposit original title documents of the properties with the court registry.

The defendants will remain in custody until the bail conditions are fully met.Defence counsel Ayiwulu Baba Ayiwulu described the ruling as reasonable and said efforts are underway to perfect the bail conditions.

The matter was adjourned to March 2, 2026, for hearing.
