An Ogun State chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Fatai Adesegun, has dismissed the coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, describing it as driven by selfish ambition and “bound to fail even before it takes off.”
Speaking on Tuesday at the end-of-year meeting of political organisations held at Omo Ilu Complex, Ijebu Igbo in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Adesegun said the coalition lacks credibility, noting that President Tinubu’s economic reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the removal of the oil subsidy, had revitalised the nation’s previously comatose economy.
“President Tinubu, no doubt, deserves another term because he has done a lot within the two and half years to bring back to life the economy of the nation that had been bastardised for so long and was even in comatose when he took over power on May 29, 2023,” Adesegun said.
“As we speak, the foreign exchange rate has been stabilised; we no longer use naira to subsidise dollar to just benefit the selected few. What about the Almighty subsidy that the selected few in the country were using to rip the country? We all know the serious drawback that our dear nation has had to contend with due to trillions of naira that we were paying for oil subsidy, but the President has courageously put an end to this colossal waste.”
He emphasised that the removal of subsidies had freed resources for national development, allowing the government to embark on key infrastructure projects connecting the South to the North.
“The result of this economic reform is that there is now funds to develop the country and that is why the President is embarking on various roads projects to connect the South to the North, these are foundation of solid development for the nation,” he said.
“However, the President can’t finish all of these in four years, he needs another term of four years to complete these good works. We must all as progressive Nigerians support this laudable vision.”
Adesegun, who is also the Convener of Ogun East Assembly, said the coalition opposing Tinubu’s re-election is being driven by personal and selfish ambition.
“And talking about the coalition against the second term of President Tinubu, that coalition has failed and it is bound to fail. The coalition is being fuelled by personal and selfish ambition and expectedly, that is bound to fail. In fact, I can’t even see the coalition, so there’s nothing to be worried about,” he said.
“With support of Nigerians who are yearning for a more prosperous and viable nation, the second term of our hardworking President would certainly be delivered.”
The end-of-year gathering also featured humanitarian gestures, including the distribution of over 200 bags of rice and cash gifts to more than 2,000 party members and community leaders from Christian, Muslim, Igbo, and Hausa communities across the 11 wards of Ijebu North.
“This programme has equally been organised to drum more support for the 2027 governorship ambition of my own boss, the Senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Adeola Yayi. Though he has not declared his ambition, we are saying that he has been good to us in Ijebu North Local Government,” Adesegun said.
“The senator has over 20 projects in our local government cutting across roads, schools, electricity, hospitals among others. We have the assurance that if someone like him becomes the governor of our dear state, then we are all in safe hands and so we urge our people to kindly support Sen Adeola Yayi to become the next governor of the state come 2027.”
Former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Adesegun, praised the APC chieftain for his selflessness, noting that the gesture boosted the morale of party members during the festive season.
The Chairman of the APC in Ijebu North, Mr. Lawrence Oladipo, commended Adesegun for giving out 10 bags of rice for each ward with N500,000 in cash, in addition to gifts distributed to other communities.
“President Tinubu is changing the face of governance and deserves another term. The governor, Dapo Abiodun, has done so well too and we are saying that he should run for the Senate in 2027,” Oladipo said.
