Suspected bandits attacked a police patrol team at the Budo Masalasi border post in Oyo State, killing one inspector and injuring others.
The assault occurred during a routine security operation, when armed assailants waylaid the officers and opened fire.
The inspector suffered fatal gunshot wounds and died shortly after, while injured team members were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Their conditions remain undisclosed, and the slain officer's identity has not been released.
Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident and announced that a manhunt is underway to apprehend the perpetrators.
The attack has heightened fears in the community, with residents and security personnel alarmed by the escalating threat of violent banditry in the region.
In a separate but related development in Kaduna State, bandits struck again in Kajuru on Saturday, abducting six residents from Unguwar Barkonu in Maraban Kajuru around 1:00 a.m.
The gunmen reportedly broke into homes and whisked victims to an unknown location. This latest kidnapping came as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kajuru chapter, held special prayers for the safe release of 177 worshippers abducted two weeks earlier during church services in Kurmin Wali.
Christian leaders at the prayer session decried the deteriorating security in the area and called on federal and state authorities to bolster security measures and protect vulnerable communities.
Kajuru authorities and police had not commented on the new abductions at the time of reporting.
Reacting to the ongoing crisis, former presidential aspirant Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu's administration of complicity in Nigeria's security woes.
He criticized what he described as official denials, suppression of facts, and intimidation of affected communities, particularly in relation to the Kajuru mass abduction, which security officials initially denied before acknowledging.
Olawepo-Hashim warned that terrorism and mass kidnappings cannot be defeated under such conditions, emphasizing that compromised local authorities undermine efforts against insecurity, regardless of international support.
