The All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Parliament has issued a strong warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against any plan to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as running mate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, cautioning that such a move would severely damage the party’s support base in the North-East.
Speaking to journalists in Bauchi on Monday, APC Youth Parliament Chairman Kabiru Garba Kobi described the circulating rumours of a potential change in the ticket as “dangerous, divisive, and baseless speculation” aimed at creating discord within the ruling party and weakening both President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.
Kobi attributed the rumours to individuals driven by personal ambitions and external political interests rather than genuine concern for the APC’s unity and stability.
“Any attempt to replace Senator Kashim Shettima would be a grave political miscalculation that could cost President Tinubu massive support in the North, particularly the North-East,” he declared.
The youth leader dismissed suggestions linking figures such as former House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Minister of Defence Lt.-Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Most Rev.
Matthew Hassan Kukah to the speculation, labelling them as distractions orchestrated by political opportunists. While acknowledging the President’s constitutional right to select a running mate, Kobi emphasized that loyalty, political wisdom, and electoral strategy must guide the decision.
He praised Vice President Shettima as a model deputy who has demonstrated unwavering loyalty, commitment, courage, experience, and deep grassroots support.
Kobi described Shettima as the most unifying political figure in the North-East and a crucial bridge connecting the region with the rest of Nigeria.“Shettima is the leader who can mobilise the North and deliver the votes President Tinubu will need in 2027.
Many of those calling for his replacement neither contributed to the APC’s victory in 2023 nor supported Tinubu’s candidacy,” he added.
The APC youth leader urged President Tinubu to ignore what he called disloyal and disconnected voices, insisting that standing firmly with Shettima is the surest path to victory in 2027.
Kobi vowed that the APC Youth Parliament would fiercely oppose any attempt to undermine the Tinubu-Shettima ticket, stressing that continuity, trust, and proven leadership are the party’s greatest assets.
He lauded Vice President Shettima as a visionary, humble, and patriotic leader whose influence in the North-East mirrors that of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and continues to inspire young Nigerians across the country.
The group warned that sidelining Shettima could fracture the APC and alienate millions of Northern voters, whose support remains essential to the party’s electoral success in the next general elections.
