British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following a tragic road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two close friends and team members.
The two-time former world champion sustained minor injuries in the December 29, 2025, crash but was deemed clinically fit to recuperate at home, according to a joint statement from the governments of Lagos and Ogun states.
Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay final respects to the deceased, Lateef Ayodele (also known as Kevin "Latif" Ayodele), his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami (also referred to as Gami Cina), his strength and conditioning coach ahead of their repatriation to the UK.
In the statement, Lagos Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso and Ogun State Special Adviser on Information Kayode Akinmade expressed deep condolences: "The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men, who tragically lost their lives. We pray the Almighty grants repose to their souls and fortitude to their loved ones."
The officials praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi for their professional care and thanked the public, Governors Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support during the incident.
Preliminary investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps suggest the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck while overtaking, possibly due to excessive speed. Joshua was a passenger in the vehicle at the time.
The accident occurred shortly after Joshua's high-profile victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025, during a holiday visit to Nigeria, his parents' homeland.
