Cameroon scored once in each half to defeat South Africa 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 round of 16 encounter on Sunday.
Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane were the goal scorers
in the highly entertaining encounter. Evidence Makgopa scored for South Africa
to set up a tense finale.
South Africa created good openings they could not convert,
and Cameroon punished their profligacy through Tchamadeu, who latched onto a
deflected shot before slotting into the bottom far corner for 1-0.
The Indomitable Lions doubled their lead two minutes after
the restart as Kofane powered a header beyond Ronwen Williams to finish off a
team move for 2-0.
Both sides had chances to run up the goals, but Williams
denied Cameroon, while Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick was tipped around the post by
Devis Epassy.
There was late drama after South Africa reduced the deficit
on 88 minutes as Makgopa slotted home a cross. Hugo Broos’ side could not get
the second as Cameroon edged into the quarter-final with their first win over
the Bafana Bafana in four attempts.
Cameroon will meet Morocco, who defeated Tanzania 1-0
earlier in the day. Brahim Diaz scored the winner on 64 minutes to inch the
hosts closer to a first AFCON title since 1976.
RESULTS
Morocco 1-0 Tanzania
South Africa 1-2 Cameroon
