The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has rejected a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja that recognised the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee as the legitimate leadership of the party and declared Abure’s tenure as national chairman expired.
The party announced its intention to appeal the ruling, describing the decision as flawed and unacceptable.National Publicity Secretary of the Abure-led faction, Obiora Ifoh, made the position known in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday.
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court had ruled that Abure’s term as national chairman had lapsed.
The court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman as the authentic leadership of the Labour Party pending the conduct of a fresh national convention.
The judgment stemmed from a suit filed by stakeholders aligned with the Usman faction, who challenged Abure’s continued leadership amid ongoing internal crises within the party. In response, Ifoh stated that the Abure-led leadership remains the duly elected and recognised national executive of the Labour Party.
He insisted that the court’s decision would be challenged on appeal, arguing that it overlooked key evidence and legal arguments presented by their side.
“The Labour Party under the leadership of Comrade Julius Abure will not accept this miscarriage of justice. We are already preparing to file our appeal and are confident that higher courts will uphold the rule of law and the democratic will of our members,” Ifoh said in the statement.
The development marks the latest escalation in the prolonged leadership tussle within the Labour Party, which has been marked by factional divisions, parallel conventions, and competing claims to control the party structure ahead of future elections.
INEC is yet to issue an official statement on how it intends to implement the court order, while both factions continue to assert legitimacy and mobilise support among members and supporters nationwide.
The Labour Party, which gained significant prominence during the 2023 general elections as the main opposition platform for Peter Obi, has since been embroiled in internal conflicts that have weakened its cohesion and public image.
