Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has firmly dismissed suggestions that Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, poses any political threat to her ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Appearing on Channels Television's Politics Today on Wednesday, Kingibe stated unequivocally that Wike has no influence over her political future.
"Absolutely no," she responded when asked if she felt threatened by the minister. "Minister Wike cannot make me win, nor can he make me lose, just like he cannot impose anybody on the FCT."
She emphasized that FCT voters have historically remained independent, resisting control by political figures from the era of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the present.
"The FCT is not structured that way. So I’m absolutely not threatened by him," she added.
Kingibe also addressed her recent switch from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a strategic move for opposition candidates seeking re-election in 2027, including those contesting area council positions.
"It’s not about Minister Wike," she clarified, suggesting that the minister's focus may shift elsewhere by 2027. "I do believe that come 2027, I don’t think the FCT will be his priority; he’ll have other things to do."
While acknowledging some progress under Wike's administration, the senator criticized areas needing urgent improvement, particularly healthcare and waste management.
She described many FCT hospitals as "empty," claiming that some facilities offer little beyond basic painkillers like paracetamol.
"I have issues with health: the hospitals are empty. There’s nothing More than Panadol, you cannot get," Kingibe said, adding that she would like the minister to show greater adherence to the law.
The senator's comments come amid ongoing public scrutiny of Wike's performance in the FCT and speculation about political alignments ahead of the next election cycle.
