A tragic road accident on the Benin-Asaba highway in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State has claimed the lives of 11 people, while seven others sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The incident occurred on Saturday when an 18-seater commercial bus traveling towards Lagos attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.
The Edo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the details on Tuesday.FRSC Sector Commander Cyril Mathew stated that investigations revealed the crash resulted from the bus's dangerous overtaking maneuver.“
11 persons were killed on Saturday in a fatal road accident along the Benin–Asaba highway in Edo State,” Mathew said. “Investigations revealed that an 18-seater commercial bus heading towards Lagos attempted to overtake another vehicle and, in the process, collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.”
He added that FRSC rescue operatives promptly arrived at the scene, evacuated the injured victims to nearby hospitals for treatment, and deposited the bodies of the deceased at a morgue.
Mathew urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and dangerous overtaking, stressing the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent such devastating crashes.
The accident occurred at the Okhuahe community section of the highway, according to multiple reports. Authorities have not released further details on the identities of the victims or the other vehicle involved.
