Soldiers of 6 Brigade, Operation Peace Shield, on Thursday successfully repelled coordinated bandit attacks and secured farming communities across Donga and Takum Local Government Areas, ensuring safe movement for hundreds of farmers.
Military sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation began at 8:15 a.m. when troops provided armed escort to farmers travelling the 29-kilometre dangerous Chanchanji–Ayu road in Donga LGA.
After safely delivering the farmers, the troops pressed on with aggressive clearance patrols through Daily, Mande, Jabi, Kwanta, and Wayase villages.
At Wayase and later Mande, bandits attempted to use herds of cattle as human shields while opening heavy fire on the soldiers.
“The criminals were met with overwhelming and precise firepower. They abandoned their positions and fled in total confusion,” a senior officer at the operation said.
No soldier or civilian sustained injury during the fierce exchanges. While pursuing the fleeing bandits, troops encountered a makeshift roadblock of felled trees mounted by the criminals at Tseen village.
The soldiers swiftly executed anti-ambush drills, cleared the obstruction, and restored free vehicular and human movement along the route.
Local farmers and residents have continued to praise the military and vigilante collaboration, saying the operation has restored confidence and allowed them to access their farmlands without fear for the first time in months.
Operation Peace Shield continues intensified patrols across Taraba’s troubled axes to dominate the terrain and deny criminal elements freedom of action.
