Troops Arrest Notorious Bandit Leader Terrorizing Benue-Taraba Border

Troops from the Nigerian Army's 6 Brigade, under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have captured a notorious bandit leader responsible for a series of kidnappings and armed robberies along the Benue-Taraba axis.

The arrest took place on December 21, 2025, during an intelligence-led operation by soldiers from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wukari at Vaase Community, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, the Brigade announced on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Fidelis Gayama, has long been a high-value target on security agencies' watchlists. Acting Brigade spokesman Lt. Unar Muhammad stated that preliminary investigations link Gayama closely to Aka Dogo, a wanted armed criminal group leader.

"He is believed to be the ringleader of a network responsible for terrorizing commuters and residents along the Kente–Wukari Road and other border communities between Benue and Taraba states," the army said.

Local police at the Vaase Outpost confirmed Gayama was among individuals declared wanted by the Beji Police Division in Ukum LGA.

The suspect is currently in military custody and will be transferred to relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

Commander of 6 Brigade and Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, praised the troops for their professionalism, calling the arrest a major setback for criminal networks in the region.

He reaffirmed the Brigade's commitment to ongoing offensive operations to safeguard lives and property, while urging the public to share timely and credible information with security forces.

In related security developments, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has assured Nigerians of enhanced measures to prevent attacks during the Christmas and New Year festivities. Director of Defence Information Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja said additional troops have been deployed to vulnerable areas and key routes, with special forces and air support on high alert.
