Tinubu Renames Federal University of Medical Sciences Azare to Honour Late Cleric Dahiru Bauchi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the Federal University of Medical Sciences (or Health Sciences), Azare, in Bauchi State, to Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University.

The emotional decision came during the President's personal condolence visit to the family and Bauchi State government, honouring the life and legacy of one of Nigeria's most revered Islamic leaders who passed away last month at the age of 98.

Standing amid mourners at the late Sheikh's mosque, President Tinubu described Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi as a beacon of humility, selfless service, and unwavering devotion to Allah, a man who loved humanity deeply, imparted transformative knowledge, and tirelessly promoted peace, tolerance, and unity across generations.

"His teachings on honesty, integrity, and good character shaped millions," the President said, calling his passing a "great national loss."

To ensure his profound impact endures, Tinubu declared: "From today onward, the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, will be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University. May God bless his memory."

The gesture has been hailed as a fitting immortalisation of the Tijjaniyya Brotherhood leader, whose influence extended far beyond Nigeria, mentoring over 63 million followers through decades of spiritual guidance, community development, and Islamic scholarship.

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, born in 1927 and holder of the national honour Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR), dedicated his life to fostering interfaith harmony and moral discipline values that resonated deeply in a diverse nation like ours.

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, warmly welcomed the President and praised the renaming as a profound honour not just for the family, but for the entire state and the Muslim Ummah.

"This recognises the Sheikh's enduring legacy of peace and service," he noted. Speaking for the bereaved family, the eldest son, Sheikh Ibrahim Dahiru Usman Bauchi, and Dr. Bashir Dahiru Bauchi expressed profound gratitude for the visit, following an earlier high-powered delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and for this timeless tribute.

President Tinubu, accompanied by dignitaries including House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni, and his son Seyi Tinubu, offered prayers for the Sheikh's soul to rest in Aljannatul Firdaus and urged Nigerians to emulate his principles of righteousness and coexistence.

This renaming isn't just a name change it's a powerful reminder of how one man's quiet devotion can inspire a nation.

In a time of challenges, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi's legacy of peace shines brighter than ever, now etched into the heart of higher education in health sciences.

A truly moving step toward preserving Nigeria's rich spiritual heritage.
