Tinubu Orders Strict Adherence to 2026 Budget Timelines

President Bola Tinubu has issued a firm directive to key economic ministers to ensure the 2026 national budget is implemented strictly according to approved timelines, emphasising fiscal discipline and purposeful expenditure in the coming year.

During a crucial meeting with the economic team at the Presidential Villa, the President specifically instructed the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to oversee rigorous compliance with the budget implementation schedule.

President Tinubu stressed that the 2026 Appropriation Act must be executed without delays, warning against the pitfalls of previous years where slow implementation hampered economic progress.

He highlighted the need for coordination among the ministries to track expenditures, monitor projects, and enforce accountability at every stage.

In his remarks, the President outlined his administration's fiscal philosophy for 2026: "We will spend with purpose and manage debt with discipline."

He reiterated commitment to prioritising capital projects that drive growth, job creation, and infrastructure development while curbing wasteful spending and ensuring borrowed funds are deployed judiciously.

The directive comes as the government finalises preparations for the presentation of the 2026 budget proposal to the National Assembly.

President Tinubu assured that the upcoming budget will align with the Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on security, education, healthcare, agriculture, and social welfare.

Ministers present reaffirmed their dedication to the President's vision, with Edun highlighting ongoing reforms to improve revenue generation and plug leakages, while Bagudu noted measures to accelerate project delivery through enhanced monitoring mechanisms.
