Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), on Friday commissioned a 60-unit Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers (AHOOAS) housing estate and a Post-Service Housing Development Limited (PHDL) shopping complex in Akobo, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The projects shows the Nigerian Army's ongoing efforts to address post-service housing challenges for personnel and enhance their quality of life.
Speaking at the event, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu emphasized that decent and affordable housing is essential for troop morale, operational effectiveness, and dignified retirement.
"The AHOOAS scheme is designed to ensure our soldiers retire with security and home ownership in their preferred locations," he said.
The Ibadan estate includes 30 two-bedroom units for junior soldiers and 30 three-bedroom units for senior personnel, building on a successful pilot in Abuja that delivered over 400 occupied homes.
The COAS highlighted plans for expansion to cities like Benin, Jos, and others, while calling on state governments to support by allocating land.
He described the initiatives as key to the Army's transformation agenda.The ceremony was graced by the Special Guest of Honour, Oyo State Governor (represented by Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Mr. William Akinfumilayo); the Royal Father of the Day, Oba Rashidi Adeolu Ladoja; Principal Staff Officers from Army Headquarters; senior serving and retired officers; project partners; members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association and Soldiers’ Wives Association; and media representatives.
