Tinubu mourns ex-UN envoy Mbanefo

President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to the family of Chief Arthur Christopher Mbanefo, Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who has died at the age of 95.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Mbanefo as an accounting icon, administrator and elder statesman who served the country with integrity, dedication and patriotism.

Tinubu noted that the late Mbanefo distinguished himself in public service and the private sector, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s development.

The statement partly read, “The President states that Chief Mbanefo, as a public servant, served Nigeria with dedication and a high sense of duty. While in the private sector, he pioneered innovations in the nation’s accountancy, tax, and audit systems.”

Mbanefo had served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University and Ahmadu Bello University.

He was also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.

The President also commiserated with Mbanefo’s friends and associates, as well as the government and people of Anambra State, over the loss.

He urged those mourning the late elder statesman to take solace in the legacy he left behind, saying his contributions to national development would endure.

Tinubu prayed for the repose of Mbanefo’s soul and for comfort for his family.
