Tinubu Approves New Nigerian Army Training Depot in Abakaliki

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, announced on Saturday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted approval for the establishment of a new Depot Nigerian Army in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

This move aims to bolster the Nigerian Army's manpower expansion and improve operational readiness amid nationwide security demands.

Speaking at the passing-out parade of 3,439 recruits from the 89 Regular Recruits Intake at Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State, Lt. Gen.

Shaibu described the new depot as a key strategic step to ensure a steady pipeline of trained soldiers for deployments across Nigeria.

"The presidential approval for the Abakaliki depot forms part of our broader strategy to increase trained personnel for national service and security operations," he stated.

"It will supplement existing facilities, strengthening the Army's ability to tackle emerging security threats."

The COAS emphasized that the facility will deliver specialized, mission-focused training, prioritizing skills in marksmanship, fieldcraft, and combat preparedness to produce disciplined and professional soldiers.

He highlighted how the initiative supports the Army's modernization efforts, including updated training programs, enhanced recruit welfare, and greater institutional strength to protect Nigeria's sovereignty.

Lt. Gen. Shaibu praised President Tinubu's consistent backing of the Nigerian Army, calling the approval a significant boost to national defense capabilities.

The new depot in Abakaliki is set to become operational soon, joining existing training centers in Zaria, Osogbo, and others nationwide.

"This new establishment will directly contribute to growing the Nigerian Army's strength, given the pervasive security challenges across the country," the COAS added.

He noted that the freshly passed-out 3,439 recruits from Zaria, along with another batch of 3,500 expected from Osogbo next week, will receive advanced infantry training prior to deployment to various theaters of operation.
