Three Dead, Several Injured As Youths, Security Operatives Clash In Katsina

At least three people have been killed and several others injured in violent clashes between security operatives and angry youths in the Sabuwar Unguwa Quarters of Katsina metropolis, triggered by the attempted arrest of a suspected drug dealer.

The incident began on Saturday when joint security operatives, including personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and police, moved to apprehend Uzairu, popularly known as "Kuda," in the Kwabron Dorawa-Unguwar Nayalle area.

Authorities alleged that Kuda was in possession of illicit drugs and seized his mobile phone.According to eyewitness accounts, Kuda resisted arrest, raising an alarm that mobilised his associates.

The confrontation escalated quickly, with the group attacking the operatives, damaging a police vehicle, and injuring several officers.

In the chaos, one officer was reportedly stabbed during a struggle to prevent disarmament, leading to a shot being fired that fatally injured Kuda.

He was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.Angered by his death, youths reportedly set fire to an NSCDC outpost in the area and vandalised motorcycles.

Tensions boiled over further on Sunday during Kuda's funeral procession, where suspected miscreants allegedly attempted further destruction, and stray bullets struck bystanders, contributing to the additional fatalities and injuries.

Confirming the incident, Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, stated that the initial resistance led to the shooting, describing it as an accidental discharge during the struggle.

He noted that the situation worsened during the funeral, resulting in the arson and further violence.

NSCDC spokesman SC Buhari Hamisu also confirmed the events, assuring residents that calm has been restored after reinforcements dispersed attempts to attack additional outposts.

He emphasised that an investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances.

Authorities have appealed for calm, urging the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands while promising a thorough probe into the clash.

The area remains tense as security presence has been beefed up to prevent further escalation.
