National Grid Suffers Total Collapse, Plunging Nigeria into Widespread Blackout

Nigeria's national electricity grid experienced a total system collapse on Monday afternoon, resulting in a near-complete blackout across most parts of the country.

Data from the Nigeria National Grid monitoring account showed that power allocation to the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) plummeted to just 50 MW by 3:12 PM, with only Abuja and Ibadan DisCos receiving minimal supply (20 MW and 30 MW respectively), while the remaining nine received 0 MW.

This is a drastic drop from the 3,660 MW allocated on Sunday, December 28.By 3:50 PM, partial restoration had begun, with total allocation rising to 120 MW, including limited supply to Benin DisCo (20 MW) and increased to Ibadan (80 MW), but most areas remained in darkness.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which oversees grid operations, confirmed the collapse via updates indicating "restoration in progress."

No immediate cause was stated, but Nigeria's grid has long been plagued by issues such as aging infrastructure, overload, gas supply constraints, and vandalism.

Electricity Distribution Companies across the country reported outages to customers, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express frustration over the sudden loss of power.

Businesses and households, already reliant on generators amid frequent outages, faced renewed disruptions.

This incident marks yet another challenge for the power sector in 2025, despite earlier reports of improved grid stability and infrastructure investments.

Authorities have assured that efforts to fully restore supply are ongoing, though full recovery could take several hours or longer.

The frequent grid collapses continue to highlight the urgent need for sustained reforms to achieve reliable electricity supply in Africa's most populous nation.
