The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says three persons have been confirmed dead following the fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Martin street.
The inferno broke out at about 6pm on Christmas Eve at the
25-storey building on Lagos Island, leaving at least 12 persons injured and
destroying goods worth millions of naira.
In a statement on Saturday, LASEMA said the bodies were
recovered from the rubble of the building on the fourth day after the fire
incident.
The agency said the deceased include one adult female and
two adult males, adding that the woman’s body was handed over to her husband.
It added that 13 other victims were rescued alive from the
incident.
LASEMA said eight males sustained varying degrees of
injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment, including a firefighter who
was injured during the rescue operation.
The agency noted that five additional victims, including
three males and two females, suffered minor injuries, received first aid at the
scene and were subsequently discharged.
It said search and rescue operations are still ongoing, with
teams from LASEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Red
Cross, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service working to locate other
persons still trapped in the building.
On Friday, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, ordered
the full demolition of the building after his visit to the site.
The governor noted that the building had suffered partial
collapse during the fire, necessitating its complete demolition.
